The arrival of large language models like ChatGPT has raised numerous dilemmas for economic, social, artistic, and intellectual life, with higher education being one of the most profoundly impacted sectors.

As AI interfaces provide instant answers to even the most complex questions, it challenges the future role of institutions whose primary purpose is the pursuit of knowledge and the training (and assessment) of future thinkers. Is the university as we know it suddenly obsolete? Is AI merely another tool that academics and students should learn to use effectively, or is it, as Noam Chomsky claims, just "a high-tech plagiarism machine" and "a way of avoiding learning"? Alternatively, could AI offer an opportunity to level the playing field for students from diverse backgrounds?
