Programs for Indigenous school students in Years 8 to 12

Our Outreach programs encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander high school students to pursue a tertiary education by introducing them to uni life. Each program includes the chance to meet current students, learn about uni courses, entrance pathways and try engaging activities from across multiple disciplines.

All programs are run by the School of Indigenous Studies (also known as SIS).

Our Outreach programs

Year 12 WACE Revision Seminar

This three-day seminar is designed for Year 12 students undertaking an ATAR-pathway. Students receive specialist subject tuition and learn exam preparation techniques designed to boost their subject grades and increase their potential for direct entry into UWA.

The seminar is run by Academic Task Force and hosted at UWA.

Key information

The School of Indigenous Studies supports Indigenous Year 12 students to attend the July WACE revision program for free. To be eligible, students should be taking 3 or more ATAR subjects. All accommodation and travel costs are covered for regional Year 12 students.

Our Outreach team sends out information in late April or early May of each year. In 2025, the WACE Revision Seminar will be held from Monday 5 to Friday 11 July.

If you’re interested in the program, get in touch with our team at [email protected] or +61 8 6488 3428.

Year 9 Djinanginy Day

Our one-day Djinanginy program (meaning ‘looking’ or ’seeing’ in Noongar) introduces Year 9 students to the uni environment through a mix of lecture-style and hands-on activities.

The program changes yearly and showcases a range of disciplines, giving students the chance to consider study in an area they might not have thought of previously. An example program might feature physics or chemistry activities, demonstrations from UWA’s Business School, and hands-on activities in sports science or engineering.

Students will also get an insight into the different uni entry pathways, receive lunch, a free t-shirt, bucket hat and other uni merch.

Key information

Year 9 Djinanginy Day is a free program for schools. However, places are limited to 120 students due to venue capacities.

Our Outreach team sends out information about the program in Term 3. In 2025, Year 9 Djinanginy Day will be held on Thursday 14 November and the theme will be Engineering.

If you’re a teacher and are interested in the program, get in touch with our team at [email protected] or +61 8 6488 3428.

Year 8 Discovery Days

Every year, we invite Year 8 students to spend a day at UWA, to meet current Indigenous students and explore the uni campus. They’ll do hands-on activities designed to mimic tasks they might be given at uni. For instance, they might test a person’s athletic ability like an AFL talent scout, apply plaster to a forearm like a doctor, act as a juror in a moot court or work out what minerals are used to make a car like a geologist.

Students will also learn about different uni entry pathways and receive lunch, a free t-shirt, bucket hat and other uni merch.

Key information

Year 8 Discovery Days are a free program for schools. However, places are limited to 60 students per day due to venue capacities.

Our Outreach team sends out information about the program in Term 3. In 2025, Year 8 Discover Days will be held on Wednesday 12 and Thursday 13 November.

School excursions to UWA

UWA school tours are a great chance for Indigenous high school students to discover uni life and meet current Indigenous students who can share their uni experiences.

We’re always ready to welcome schools to Bilya Marlee (meaning ‘river of the swan’) – the purpose-built home of the School of Indigenous Studies, Centre for Aboriginal Medical and Dental Health (CAMDH) and Poche Centre for Indigenous Health.

Schools can enjoy a tour of Bilya Marlee, and discover the facilities and resources available just for Indigenous students, and visit other areas of campus, including Winthrop Hall, the Sport and Recreation Centreresidential colleges, lecture theatres, Guild Village. We can also arrange visits to individual departments if your students have a particular interest.

School tours are free. If you’d like to book a tour, please complete the below form or get in touch with our team at [email protected] or +61 8 6488 3428.

Visits to metropolitan and regional schools

The SIS team do regular visits to metropolitan schools and regional communities each year, including the Peel, Pilbara, Mid West, Kimberley regions and wider WA. Aspire UWA also tours its partner schools and communities throughout WA, often accompanied by SIS Staff.
