Snorkeler fitness assessment
This assessment is for academic staff, general staff, postgraduate students and honours students who are required to snorkel for work. All participant snorkelers on a UWA fieldtrip are required to complete this assessment. This includes research fieldtrips by post graduates. This assessment is mandatory no matter with whom/or where the diver intends to snorkel.
Visiting snorkelers require the assessment unless a satisfactory reciprocity agreement is made with the visitors? organisation. The acceptance of the reciprocity is at the discretion of the UWA Diving and Boating Safety Officer (DBSO). If no reciprocity is accepted a visiting diver may also be required to complete a snorkel assessment.
All participant snorkelers on a UWA diving fieldtrip are required to have completed this assessment.
This assessment is not considered a training exercise but verification of fitness and competency in order to participate in snorkel activities.
Scope
A snorkeler will be assessed on their ability to effectively and safely demonstrate their diving competency and proficiency in the following:
- Understanding of the risks and control measures associated with snorkelling including shallow water blackout
- Knowledge where to find details of UWA requirements for snorkel fieldwork
- In water skills
- Swim 200 metres nonstop without the use of swim aids, within 5 minutes
- Fin 800 metres within 19 minutes (without using arms)
- Inert snorkeler rescue, 100m within 5 minutes, i.e. tow or push another snorkeler
- Demonstrate two methods of mask cleaning
- Demonstrate two methods of snorkel clearing
- Duck dive to 2 metres and retrieve an item from the depth
- Demonstrate weight belt removal and replacement at surface

- Completed snorkel registration form requires DBSO or delegate sighting and approval prior to undertaking assessment
