UWA Advance activities and badges

Advance your skills. Advance your career.

Participating in UWA Advance co-curricular activities is a way to enhance your education and help you showcase skills and experiences beyond your classes at UWA.

UWA students can achieve a digital badge that recognises completing co-curricular activities, a badge that can be shared online through your LinkedIn profile or within your resume, informing future employers about your practical experience and transferable skills.

What are UWA Advance badges?

UWA Advance will undergo several changes throughout 2025. However, at its core, UWA badges are virtual evidence of co-curricular accomplishments and achievements, programs and activities that UWA students participate and complete outside of their units and studies, specifically rewarding unpaid volunteering. Achieving a digital badge complements your academic transcript by showcasing a range of employer valued skills and experiences while studying at UWA.

Badges are set by approved activity and program coordinators who establish the eligibility criteria that students will have to meet to complete a badged achievement. Once achieved, UWA Advance will award students their badges within the calendar year after the activity or program has been completed. Digital badges can be easily shared online such as LinkedIn, for example, and they contain details of the transferable skills that you have after completing the program activity.

How do I earn badges?

  1. Explore UniHub for available activities that are awarded badges. Please note: activities on UniHub are subject to change.
  2. Apply to an activity or program that has been approved by UWA Advance for a full digital badge.
  3. Complete the eligibility requirements of the activity or program (e.g. 40 hours of unpaid volunteering)

Frequently asked questions

  • What is a co-curricular activity?

A co-curricular activity is an approved activity, program or learning experience that is separate to, but complements academic learning, often contributing to a student’s personal and professional development.  Activities are generally ungraded and not eligible for academic credit (with some exceptions). Students must satisfy and complete any eligibility requirements set by the coordinators of the co-curricular activity.

  • How do I know if an activity is part of UWA's badging program?

Co-curricular activities that are part of the badging program have been assessed by UWA Advance and aligned to a full badge. Approved UWA Advance activities will be published on the UniHub website and will also be identifiable by a badge icon that has been attributed to the approved activity.

  • Are all co-curricular activities awarded a badge when they are completed?

Each approved co-curricular activity has been assessed against the awarding criteria. Coordinators of the activity or program set the eligibility criteria that has to be achieved by a UWA student. Once completed, the student will be emailed details of their digital badge.

  • Do I have to apply to have a badge awarded to me?

Your badge will be awarded to you within the calendar year of completing the activity or program. You will receive the digital badge through student email. You will not have to apply for an approved badge as the Activity Coordinator will keep a record of your participation. Activity or program coordinators will communicate with UWA Advance about students who have completed their badge. Once you have met the awarding guidelines, the digital badge will be automatically awarded to you through the relevant online platform (e.g. My eQuals).

  • How do I access the My eQuals platform to receive my badge and can I share the badge?

You will receive an email notification from the My eQuals platform that a badge has been awarded to you. Log into the platform and follow the easy prompts to share your badge.

  • Do I need to complete numerous co-curricular activities to be awarded a badge?

Each co-curricular activity has been assessed for learning and skills development, participation requirements and awarding criteria. Approved activities are assigned a primary Badging Category (Leadership, Careers and Employability, Entrepreneurial/Innovation; Professional Development; Global Citizen; Digital Capability; Indigenous Awareness; Community Impact). Some activities require more participation than others, so you might need to complete two or more activities from the same Badging Category to be awarded a digital badge.

  • Can I earn a badge for volunteering work?

Yes, badging recognises unpaid volunteering work, which is an important way that UWA students contribute to their community as well as their career development. Volunteering work must be approved by UWA Advance for awarding, and the eligibility criteria is established by the volunteer activity or program coordinators. You must complete at least 40 hours of volunteering within one calendar year to be awarded a badge. Students cannot receive retrospective badges – they must be awarded in the year of completion.

  • Can I receive a badge for paid activities or activities where I receive credit?

Generally the awarding of a digital badge is only for activities where you haven’t received payment or study credit.

  • Will badges be linked to StudentConnect?

The My eQuals platform is the official repository for badges. From here you can digitally share badges and other qualifications with employers and social media platforms such as LinkedIn.
