Research Training Program

Australian and New Zealand citizens and permanent residents are exempt from paying a contribution toward the cost of their research courses if UWA provides them with a Research Training Program place. This exemption applies for up to four years full-time equivalent study for a doctorate by research and two years full-time equivalent study for a master's by research. The RTP is a performance-based funding scheme administered by the Federal Department of Education and Training.

Organisational Psychology Placements

This course requires students to undertake organisational psychology placements across a wide range of industries and organisations. These placements ensure students acquire the necessary skills and competencies under the careful supervision of qualified organisational psychologists.

Some placement organisations have specific requirements for working within their organisation. As such you may need to provide evidence of, or comply, with additional requirements relevant to the placement site.

These include, but are not limited to:

Preparing your application

Applicants need to:

  • have obtained an APAC-accredited honours degree (or equivalent) in Psychology, with a mark of IIA or higher, and
  • find a PhD supervisor who is an academic staff member of the School of Psychological Science who agrees to supervise you if you are offered a place in program, and agree on a basic outline of the research project you will undertake. You must have this supervisory agreement and outline of your PhD worked out prior to applying to the program. Start looking for a supervisor at least two to three months before the application is due.

English is the language of instruction and assessment at UWA and you will need to meet the English language requirements of the University to be eligible for a place. 

Graduate applicants require at least two successful years of full-time or equivalent degree studies undertaken in Australia, Canada (excluding Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States of America. The Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Industrial and Organisational Psychology is a combined course offering a full four year program of doctoral research with the Master of Industrial and Organisational Psychology. The master's component includes nine coursework units, and 1000 hours of practical placement spread over three settings.

What is a PhD?

  • UWA’s flagship research degree, which can be taken in any discipline area in the University, providing that appropriate supervision and resources are available.
  • A program of independent, supervised research that is assessed solely on the basis of a thesis, which is examined externally (as of 2018, by two examiners and a viva).
  • The work presented for a PhD must be a substantial and original contribution to scholarship, demonstrating mastery of the subject of interest as well as an advance in that field of knowledge.
  • PhD applicants must meet the eligibility requirements for studying a PhD at UWA, which includes adequate research preparation and a minimum level of English language competence.

Take Level 4 or 5 units offered by the UWA Business School to the value of 12 points, or level 5 units to the value of 12 points from the Master of Business Psychology 73550 (research and placement units excluded) and approved by the course coordinator or the Head of the School of Psychological Science.
