Community partner

West Australian Opera

UWA is proud Tertiary Partner of West Australian Opera (WAO), giving our students unique access to rehearsals, performances and experiences, as well as working closely with staff and visiting artists.

West Australian Opera was established in 1967 and is Western Australia’s only full-time, professional opera company. WAO offers an annual season of main-house productions at His Majesty’s Theatre as well as programs in regional Western Australia, a strong education program and community events across Western Australia.

About the partnership

Through the Distinguished Artist Lecture Series UWA and WAO present a series of lecture recitals, talks and masterclasses with internationally recognised directors and artists from WAO’s opera season, which will delight audiences with a unique insight into the world of opera.

A Masters of Music (Opera Performance) will be offered to students who will work in collaboration with WAO and use their performances as part of the degree while being mentored by experienced staff from both organisations.

With every opera season, leading international artists and directors also run workshops and mentorship programs for students to participate in WAO performances, both in Perth and regional WA. UWA students will be invited to attend dress and production rehearsals as well as meet with artists to discuss the art form, singing and the industry.

One benefit for students is the ability to work with both the performers and audiences of the future. Visiting directors and artists will work with UWA students through the ‘Distinguished Artist Lecture Series’ and will learn from creatives featuring in operas like ‘Tosca’,  ‘The Merry Widow’ and ‘Lucia di Lammermoor’.
