Closed Study Tours

The closed study option can be arranged for all client groups with the course specifically designed for the needs of each particular group.

Closed Study Tours can be classified into the following four program types.

UWA Experience

This program is designed to not only give students a taste of what it is like to be a UWA student, but also to provide students with the skills to be successful within the UWA academic learning environment. Key objectives of the program are listed below:

  • Develop the language, research and study skills required for tertiary studies
  • Develop an understanding of Australian culture
  • Develop analytical, reflective and critical thinking and become confident autonomous learners in a tertiary environment

This program can focus on discipline areas such as science, engineering, law, medicine and business. To complement the group's English language studies, UWA Study Tours can arrange student visits to university faculties, providing students with the opportunity to have a valuable professional and cultural experience. It also allows students to put into practice the skills developed during the course.

Australian Culture and Critical Thinking

This program introduces students to Australian culture, while focusing on critical thinking and clear expression. Key objectives of the program are to:

  • Evaluate arguments
  • Identify assumptions
  • Judge patterns of inference
  • Apply various methods of reasoning
  • Critically analyse how Australia and Australians are viewed by the world
  • Compare Australia with home country and culture

A sample program for this type of study tour is included below.

English for Specific Purposes

This program offers students the opportunity to refine written and verbal communication skills that employers find important yet are difficult to master. In the course, students learn practical skills for workplace and public communication. The program uses a wide range of professional situations in three aspects:

  • The logical organisation and presentation of ideas
  • Detailed proof-reading
  • Conventions of various writing genres such a business emails and proposals through learning activities including seminars and oral presentations.

TESOL Professional Development

This program is an opportunity for pre-service/undergraduate English language teachers to enhance their knowledge of current English language teaching methodologies through lectures, workshops and guided observations of classroom practices of native-speaking teachers. Key objectives of the program are to:

  • Provide practicing teachers the opportunity to develop their knowledge or current approaches to English language teaching and learning
  • Explore ways of applying these methodologies to their own situations
