Meet Lucius, a passionate aspiring doctor and proud recipient of the prestigious UWA Fogarty Foundation Scholarship.
I wanted to challenge myself, meet new people, and develop in university, and the UWA Fogarty Foundation scholarship has acted as a catalyst to these three goals"
Lucius Beh, UWA Biomedical Sciences Student
Lucius faced a significant decision when offered scholarships to study medicine in other states. However, he recognised that UWA was the perfect fit for him, thanks to the support and invaluable connections it offers.
“The scholarship creates a unique network among like-minded high achieving students and provides access to academics and industry connections. There is an extra element of the scholarship which supports different initiatives of the scholars which means you can transform your dreams and your ideas to action,” Lucius shares.
With most of his life spent in Western Australia, Lucius feels a strong connection to giving back to the WA community. His grandmother's wise words, ‘charity begins at home,’ resonate deeply with him, reinforcing his decision to pursue the UWA Fogarty Foundation Scholarship.
Not only was his decision to apply easy, but so was the application process. Lucius applied on the UWA website and accessed support through askUWA. Lucius also found the Fogarty scholarship applicant matrix useful in selecting his best achievements and activities for his application.
The UWA Fogarty Foundation Scholarship has opened the door to countless opportunities and experiences for Lucius. From making connections with his own academic mentor and a senior scholar who is also an aspiring doctor, to attending events and soon travelling to London for further study.
Last year Lucius had the opportunity to be a co-convenor at the Fogarty Futures Leadership Conference. He made many meaningful connections with other like-minded students and professionals, contributing to his personal and professional development. “It has also given me an experience I’ll remember straight out of high school – not every 18-year-old can say they organised a leadership conference!”
These countless experiences are invaluable to Lucius, and the UWA Fogarty Foundation Scholarship has taken him a step closer to his ambitions of becoming a doctor.
Lucius advises students considering applying for a UWA Fogarty Foundation Scholarship to “be yourself! All the scholars are all motivated and high achieving students, but each of us have our own stories and passions. It’s not about how much you do and what you achieve, but your ability and ambitions to achieve meaningful change.”
