Meet Jacinta – Fine Arts and Art History student, gallery lover and artist.
Jacinta (she/her) grew up with a love of painting and drawing but it took a special someone to convince her to follow her passions and open her eyes to the career opportunities available to her in the arts.
She is about to graduate with a Fine Arts and Art History degree and a swag of industry experience through her job as the Visitor Experience Officer at The Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery at UWA.
“The role involves being the first point of contact for all visitors and preparing the gallery for the day and curator talks, as well as welcoming special guests to the gallery. I love having the chance to interact with people from all walks of life and hear their views and experiences of the artwork on display.”
Jacinta says the Gallery is the best kept secret on campus.
There’s a lot of events and most of them are free! With each exhibition there’s an array of curator tours, artist talks, workshops and seminars. Not only is it a great experience, it also facilitates a place of connection with people who share like-minded views.
Jacinta credits the relationships she’s made at university as an important part of her journey on both a professional and personal level.
I have made lifelong friends through my degree and my network of like-minded people has been important for my development not only as an artist, but also as a person.
Jacinta says she’s looking forward to graduating with the knowledge that her future is bright!
“I’d love to keep working at the Gallery and I’d also like to gain some experience through international curatorial internships. One day I would love to pursue my art full time in a nice studio and would also love to be working in a gallery in Europe, with time to spend on my own art ventures.”
The Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery is free and open 12pm – 5pm Tuesday to Saturday. Find out what exhibitions are taking place by visiting the Gallery’s website.
