Hear from Urmila, a current international student from Botswana studying a Bachelor of Biomedical Science at UWA. Urmila shares what they love most about studying in Perth and why it is the ideal study location for international students.

Meet Urmila

“Hi, I’m Urmila. I am a first-year international student studying a Bachelor of Biomedical Science at UWA. I moved to Perth at the start of 2023 after completing my education in Botswana, where I studied from nursery school to A-levels. Currently, I am living in the residential colleges on campus, which provides a unique experience for international students.

Since moving to Perth, I’ve had a blast making new friends from all over the world, learning about their cultures, and creating unforgettable memories. It truly is an amazing rollercoaster ride.”

Why did you decide to study in Perth over other study destinations?

“Choosing the right university was a difficult decision for me. However, my father suggested that I look into universities in Perth due to their reputation. After researching, I decided that UWA was the best fit for me. The university offers all the necessary facilities that can aid me in my plans, and I was particularly drawn to its stunning limestone buildings and unique architecture.”

What were your first impressions of Perth/UWA?

“The city is a serene place, with the Swan River exuding calmness. It is not overly busy nor too crowded, making it an ideal location for international students.”

What is your favourite thing about UWA?

“The beautiful Matilda Bay is situated conveniently beside UWA, making it the perfect place to unwind and forget your troubles. Whether you prefer to have a picnic or a stroll with friends in the evening, this place has it all. The sky above presents a stunning display of vibrant colours that reflect on the tranquil waters, creating a picturesque view that's perfect for relaxation after a long, exhausting day.”

What do you enjoy most about your course?

“I find the labs and lectures to be quite enjoyable. The lecturers are particularly adept at incorporating interactive elements into their morning 9am lectures, which helps me stay engaged and alert throughout the session.

Overall, I feel like the program is well designed and offers a lot of value to students, like me, who are looking to learn and grow in a supportive, stimulating environment.”

Did you receive a scholarship to study at UWA?

“I received the Global Excellence Scholarship and I am extremely grateful for it. This scholarship provides me with AUD$12,000 annually towards my course fees.”

Is there any advice you would give to other students considering UWA?

“While it's important to prioritise studying, it's equally crucial to prioritise your mental health. My advice is to strive for a balance between the two to maintain happiness and good health.

Additionally, it's highly recommended that you avoid leaving lectures or assignments until the last minute. This way, you'll have ample time to hang out with friends and prepare for exams without having to catch up on past work.”

What are your plans for when you graduate?

“I am considering pursuing a postgraduate degree in either graduate medicine or biomedical science, but I am keeping my options open.”
