Meet Shrutika

“Hi, my name is Shrutika and I’m an International student from India pursuing a Master of Business Psychology

Why did you decide to study in Perth over other study destinations?

“Australia was at the top on my list of countries where I wanted to pursue my higher education for many reasons, despite not having any family here. With such a diverse population, I knew that this would help me not just academically but also personally and professionally.

UWA offered me a course which fit perfectly into my checklist, and being part of the Go8 was the cherry on top!”

What is your favourite thing about UWA?

“UWA has given me a lot of opportunities to meet some extremely talented students from all over the world, and I am grateful to have had very helpful professors in my degree to date. I am also actively involved in student life, being part of two amazing clubs - the UWA Student Guild Women's Department and Sanskriti UWA, which is a club for Indian International students. Being part of the committees has given me invaluable experiences and added to my skill and mindset. I am excited to explore, learn and give more in my last year at UWA!"

What do you enjoy most about your course?

“I was happy to know that the course is exactly what I thought, and more! I love talking to people and working in teams – most of my units give me the opportunity to do just that and I also love the fact that I get to know people from various backgrounds, not just culture wise but also education wise. The lecturers are very talented and educated as well, and I would like to specially mention my course coordinator Lisette who is so helpful and kind."

Did you complete any internships or work experience as part of your degree?

“I came across the McCusker Centre for Citizenship stall during O-week, and discovered that an internship with them would give me the opportunity to work alongside amazing organisations that matched my interest, skills and experience – this motivated me to apply! With guidance from my course coordinator, I was able to apply for an internship at the right time having developed skills that I could use."

What was the highlight of your internship?

“The highlight of my internship was the confidence that my supervisor Michelle showed in me! I was able to work on important projects with her regarding psychosocial safety, and that has helped me get a clearer idea on future career ambitions.”

What advice do you have for students thinking about doing an internship or going into an internship?

“I would give them the same advice that my course coordinator gave me – apply for an internship after 1 or 2 semesters as this will help you develop the knowledge and skillset that you can use on your internship. Apart from that, ask tonnes of questions and don’t forget to have fun!”

Ready to make a difference?

You can undertake an internship by enrolling in the UWA McCusker Centre for Citizenship Internship unit. Internships are very popular, so your first step is to check with your Student Advising Office for more information. Interns are selected on a competitive basis and then matched to suitable roles. To find out more and to check your eligibility, visit the Internship page on the UWA McCusker Centre for Citizenship website. You can also hear from other interns and read their stories.
