Did you know that UWA has three health professions education online courses available for students around the globe, but you still may be wondering… how exactly can this help your career?

Completing a degree in health professions education provides you with a unique pathway to become qualified in teaching, course design, leading and implementing educational change, and conducting research in education as a health professional.

UWA alumni Prattama Santoso Utomo from Indonesia and current student Mira Adhikari Baral from Nepal, embody the transformative impact of these courses and their impacts across the world.

A strong foundation for global leadership

Prattama, an Assistant Professor at Universitas Gadjah Mada in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, pursued a Master of Health Professions Education (MHPEd) at UWA under the Australia Awards Scholarship. Reflecting on his experience, Prattama credits the course for equipping him with essential skills in teaching, learning, assessment, research, and leadership.

"All aspects are necessary for my career as an educator of healthcare professionals, and also in managing health professions education programs in my institution."

Since graduating in 2018, Prattama has transitioned smoothly into a research-driven role as a PhD candidate in health professions education at the University of Rochester, US.

His achievements include publishing over 20 research articles and book chapters and being selected as a Fulbright Scholarship awardee.

“My MHPEd degree and experience equipped me with fundamental skills and knowledge to serve as a health professional educator, and also assist in leading and managing different courses, educational projects, and educational research in my institution.”

He continued “I also adapted to research culture, resulting in creating evidence-based and research-based innovations”.

Prattama's journey in health has led him to many different countries and exciting experiences, highlighting the necessity for health education in developing communities.

Nursing education in Nepal

For current student Mira, a passionate nurse educator from Nepal, studying the Master of Health Professions Education has been key to developing her teaching skills as she moves toward making a lasting impact on nursing education in her
home country.

"I believe that this course can help me advance my nursing education career and contribute to enhancing the quality of nursing education in Nepal," she shares.

Having nearly completed her course, she highlights that the academic reputation, innovative and research-driven approach to health professions education at UWA will help her elevate nursing education in Nepal.

The course’s emphasis on interprofessional collaboration with students and professionals from different backgrounds, particularly resonated with her.

"The thing I enjoyed the most was working with a group of varied professional backgrounds and creating a teaching session with an interprofessional team," she recalls, highlighting how this experience strengthened her understanding of team-based healthcare education.

A gateway to success in health professions education

For Prattama and Mira, the impact of UWA's health professions education courses on students from diverse backgrounds has helped create a rich collaborative approach to education. The course has prepared them for leadership roles and has empowered them to make significant contributions to healthcare education globally.
