Community Engagement
Bringing life science closer to the public
Our work goes beyond research and training. We actively engage with the community nationally and internationally. We work to advise, inspire, mentor and raise science awareness across the life sciences sector, particularly in the medical and health area.
Programs
We promote science by offering a range of programs for current UWA students, visiting researchers and the community.
MicroBlitz Internship
The Barry Marshall MicroBlitz Internship was launched in January 2019 with the aim of developing and sharing STEM activities with the wider community.
Led by Internship Ambassadors, Professor Barry Marshall and Professor Andrew Whiteley, entrance to the internship is selected on merit, and each semester eight UWA undergraduate science students are accepted as part of the Science Work Placement Unit. The internship attracts students as it provides a unique multidisciplinary experience across the UWA Schools of Biomedical Sciences and Agriculture and Environment.
The program continues in 2021 thanks to the support of UWA and The McCusker Charitable Foundation
To date, the Barry Marshall MicroBlitz Internship has hosted 40 interns and delivered STEM activities to more than 2000 Western Australian high school students.
Working with my fellow students has been rewarding as it has fostered a team environment, which I believe will be important for future employment. I am also looking forward to the outreach programs as they will increase my confidence in science communication and will allow me the opportunity to give back to the community.Caitlin

Outreach Initiatives
We achieve our mission of public outreach by promoting life science to the community on both offline and online platforms.
School Visits
Engaging school students is an important part of raising science awareness in the community. We regularly visit and interact with schools to bring science to classroom.
Newman College Science Week
How wonderful that the Marshall Centre is continuing their great work and is reaching out to share news of their latest discoveries with us all and hopefully to inspire the next generation of young Western Australians to likewise reach for the heights.Professor Lyn Beazley AO
