Sculpt x UPhilSoc – 'The End of History?' Discussion

Wednesday, 31 July 2024, 3.30–4.30pm

Join us for a discussion of LWAG’s THE END OF HISTORY exhibition and Fukyama’s theory which inspired it.
Light refreshments provided.

Francis Fukuyama's 1989 essay "The End of History?" posited that the conclusion of ideological evolution in Western liberal democracy would result in a stable and conflict-free world. Critics have cited the Arab Spring, the rise of Islamic fundamentalism, and 9/11 as evidence of ongoing ideological debates despite Fukuyama's vision. The 2008 financial crisis served as an additional catalyst for discussions regarding neoliberalism, leading scholars such as Alain Badiou and Seumas Milne to question the emergence of new ideological conflicts. Fukuyama's concepts encourage us to investigate whether we are truly experiencing an era of ideological stagnation or the onset of a new ideological era.

The exhibition, THE END OF HISTORY, investigates the relationships between artists, historical events, and subconscious influences from 1985 to 1995. The exhibition showcases works from the University of Western Australia Art Collection that reflect the political and societal changes of the era. The following are included: the fall of the Berlin Wall, the rise of the Internet, Australia's Bicentennial, WA Inc., and the recession. In addition, recently acquired works by younger artists investigate generational connections and challenge linear historical narratives. In response, the Origins exhibition explores the physicality of humans, family mythologies, births, deaths, and cosmic cycles, showcasing pieces from the Cruthers Collection of Women's Art. The ongoing relevance of Fukuyama's thesis and the changing nature of history and ideology will be explored through these exhibitions and the subsequent discussion. Take advantage of this chance to explore the intersection of contemporary thought, history, and art.

This event is a collaboration between LWAG’s own Sculpt Student Committee and the UWA Philosophy Society.

Sculpt Committee members will introduce the exhibition and facilitate discussions based on some of the artworks.

Following this, the Philosophy society will lead a discussion of Fukyama’s theory.
