Distinguished Artist Lecture Series with Stuart Maunder

UWA is the proud Tertiary Partner of West Australian Opera. This partnership gives UWA students access to rehearsals and performances as well as opportunities to work closely with WAO staff and visiting artists, including professional performance experiences at events such as Opera in the Quarry.

UWA and WAO present a series of lecture recitals, talks and masterclasses with internationally recognised directors and artists from WAO’s 2019 season, to delight audiences with a unique insight into the world of opera.

Stuart Maunder
Verdi’s Masterpiece: Macbeth

Join us in conversation with director Stuart Maunder as we explore the operatic work of Verdi’s Macbeth and discuss why the work is considered a masterpiece, Verdi’s fascination with Shakespeare and how this tale translates so well between music and literature.

For the last thirty years Stuart has been directing musical theatre and opera in Australia. He joined The Australian Opera as Stage Manager in 1978, becoming a Resident Director in 1981. In 1992 he joined The Royal Opera (UK) as a Staff Director whilst continuing to direct in Australia, regional UK, France and the USA. His Trial by Jury, HMS Pinafore and Pirates of Penzance have been televised nationally on ABC TV. Recent Australian productions have included Cunning Little Vixen, Into the Woods, Sunday in the Park with George, Sweeney Todd (Victorian Opera), Candide, The Mikado (New Zealand Opera) and Sweeney Todd, Tosca and La Bohème (West Australian Opera). Stuart is currently Artistic Director of State Opera South Australia.
