The Winthrop Singers

The Winthrop Singers will present the second performance of Nicholas Bannan’s Gospel According to St Luke, premiered on Palm Sunday in St Patrick’s Basilica, Fremantle, as part of the 2019 National Choralfest of the Australian National Choral Association. As at that performance, the organ will be played by Dominic Perissinotto, though the accompaniment has been re-arranged for the Conservatorium’s Chamber Organ, working in a Baroque-style continuo ensemble with Miah Smith (cello) and Rowan Swarbrick (double bass).

The Passion is presented in a manner akin to a radio play. The Evangelist (Andrew Foote) and Jesus (Kieran Lynch) are spoken parts, their text notated in order to coordinate with the instrumentalists and choir. The remaining characters (bystanders, Pilate, St Peter, thieves, a centurion) are all sung by members of The Winthrop Singers, as are the choruses that represent the disciples, high priests, Roman soldiers, and the citizens of Jerusalem.

The Winthrop Singers will perform two other works Thomas Weelkes’s motet for Christ’s entry into Jerusalem Hosanna to the Son of David; and John Stainer’s meditation on the Crucifixion God So Loved the World.
