Anthropogenic change and conservation

Human impact on the planet, be it through climate change, habitat loss and fragmentation, or anthropogenic inputs to the environment, alter the selective landscape of organisms.

We have diverse interests in understanding the effects of the Anthropocene on plants and animals. Our interests lie broadly in understanding how environmental challenges such as heat waves, noise or chemical pollutants, affect an organism’s behaviour and reproduction.

We study  behavioural and evolutionary responses to these challenges via  genetic/epigenetic changes, and are concerned with understanding the effects on population viability that arise from depleting, fragmenting and mixing populations. We also use experimental evolution to find solutions to issues that arise from the exploitation of the planet, such as carbon capture and improved use of nutrients by plants.
