The University of Western Australia’s Albany campus is inviting the community to celebrate its 25th anniversary and discover more about its teaching and research at Open Day this Sunday 8 September.
Over the past 25 years, UWA Albany has delivered impactful research and supported a diverse community of students. Displays, presentation and staff will be available to showcase study options, pathways into university and support available help students succeed.
The program features displays and activities from the Rural Clinical School, Great Southern Marine Research Facility, Ecology and Conservation.
The Ocean Research Hub will give attendees the opportunity to learn about whale and clean energy research including the M4 Wave Energy Converter — a large-scale wave energy prototype set to be launched in King George Sound — plastics in our water and Mirnong Maat whale research.
Rural Clinical School staff will explain the training journey your doctor takes to become your GP or specialist; you can explore the medical museum and interactive display; and listen to a talk from 2024 Order of Australia recipient Dr Kirsten Auret.
Explore the urban and aquatic ecology displays at the Science Hub and interact with experiments such as microscopic exams in the lab, an interactive river model and learn to build a nesting box.
UWA Albany Director Tim Martin said attendees would also be able to learn about the new Bachelor of Education (Primary) course, which is commencing in 2025.
“The course will be delivered here at the Albany campus and in partnership with local schools,” Mr Martin said.
“We will have staff who can help with inquiries about any courses at UWA in Albany and Perth as well as advice on admissions, course planning, scholarships, accommodation and careers.”
A Walking Together Hub includes a Yarning Circle with Merningar Elder Lynette Knapp and an Ask Us Anything Hub will have information about courses, support services, admission requirements, the application process, Indigenous pathways, scholarships, careers and more.
At the Children’s University Kid Zone fun activities include juggling ball making, a campus treasure hunt, origami making and a colouring-in competition.
“At the Study Hub attendees can speak to academics in our study areas including arts, commerce, education and social work,” Mr Martin said.
“You can explore UWA’s vibrant campus life at the Student Life Hub which will feature an arts exhibit, coffee van and face-painting and enjoy a rare opportunity to explore Spectrum Theatre with our Pride community.”
