Join three experienced clinicians from different schools of thought in psychology who will discuss anxiety disorder at an event hosted by The University of Western Australia’s Robin Winkler Clinic this month.
Clinical Matter Series 2024: One Case. Three Clinicians. Three Approaches will examine the conceptualisation, formulation and intervention strategies for a clinical case, based on the psychologists’ different theoretical backgrounds.
Associate Professor Rodrigo Becerra, from UWA’s School of Psychological Science, said anxiety disorder was the most common mental health condition in Australia.
“One in four Australians experience debilitating anxiety,” Associate Professor Becerra said.
“Obstacles for accessing therapy are manifold, including the stigma of seeing a psychologist as well as uncertainty about what psychologists actually do.”
The panel includes Amanda Oliver, a psychoanalytic psychotherapist specialising in adolescents and adults; Chris Hayes, a clinical psychologist and advanced schema therapist; and Professor Peter McEvoy, a senior clinical psychologist at the Centre for Clinical Interventions and Curtin University.
An anxiety disorder case study will be examined using psychoanalysis, exploring connections between the conscious and unconscious mind; schema therapy, targeting patterns of thinking not conducive to adaptation; and cognitive behaviour therapy, changing negative thoughts and behaviour.
The panel members will present their own pathways into their theoretical models and introduce their views on the case, with reference to assessment and intervention strategies. It will be followed by questions from the audience and a general discussion.
The free event will be held on Thursday 21 November from 4pm to 6pm at the UWA Social Sciences Lecture Theatre. For more information email Associate Professor Becerra or register your attendance here.
