The University of Western Australia Data Institute will explore the potential of artificial intelligence to shape an inclusive and sustainable future at a conference on June 14.
Professor Michael Small, Director UWA Data Institute and CSIRO-UWA Chair of Complex Systems, said it is important to understand technology, data, machine learning and AI and how these technologies can impact on and be useful to people.

“Data and artificial intelligence are being used more often than you may realise — it is in our mobiles, software and now it is being used by companies to work smarter,” Professor Small said.
“The use of data and AI may be a cause for concern for some, while for others, it is a huge opportunity.”
The annual conference will unpack what a future looks like with AI, how it impacts people’s lives and how industry is realising its transformative power.
“The UWA Data Institute is about articulating everything from hardcore research in terms of maths and computer science, through to applications in the community,” Professor Small said.
“There's immense opportunity, there's immense potential, there's immense power in the amount of data and the tools that we have and how we use it.
“This is an opportunity for industry, the community and people interested in AI to get a glimpse into the potential applications and potential for industries where it's used.”
The event includes speakers from world leading institutions, government and industry and author and science commentator Dr Karl Kruszelnicki AM who will talk about how AI can, can’t and should be used for communication.
Julianne Sparke, Industry Engagement Manager at the UWA Data Institute, facilitates the research and its connection to industry.
“Global leading research is happening right here in Perth and AI is a tool that can help industry perform better — it can enhance future job roles and shape the future of work,” Ms Sparke said.
