Team UWA Maali have been presented with their playing jerseys in a presentation held at the Water Sport Complex on Wednesday 13 September 2023.
The team received words of encouragement from Acting Senior Manager Student Athletes and Performance Sport David Clear, before Whadjuk/Ballardong man and UWA alumni John McGuire led the group in a traditional Welcome to Country and shared wise words on the connection to country, reflecting on the positive impact of sport. UWA alumni John Inverarity also shared his connection to sport on campus and the making of lifelong friends through sport at UWA. Warumungu man Aaron Sutton, UWA Maali uniform artist and UWA alumni, then explained the significance of the design to the players.
This year, the UWA Maali team will be competing in Ultimate, Volleyball and Fencing at the 2023 UniSport Nationals on the Gold Coast (Kombumerri country) later this month. Over 6,000 participants from across the country will battle it out to be crowned national champions in over 31 different sports.
UniSport Nationals provide an opportunity for students at our 42 member universities from across Australia to compete head-to-head in a number of national standard sporting competitions. The winners from each sport in UniSport Nationals will be combined with the winners of the various Nationals Championships throughout the year to name one university the Overall Nationals Champions.
UWA Maali were successful in last year's nationals campaign walking away with 17 bronze, 11 silver and 7 gold medals. In addition, the team will look to defend its title of West Per Capita Champion which is given to the most successful university in Western Australia.
Congratulations to all students representing UWA Maali over the week-long competition.
