The second annual Western Series – International Student Challenge, held on Friday 12 May at UWA Fitness and Recreation Centre, welcomed universities across Western Australia.
The Western Series has evolved to provide a platform to celebrate diversity across the student cohort and encourage participation among the international students across Western Australia. The Intervarsity competition included five teams competed across four universities including University of Western Australia, Curtin University, Edith Cowan University, and the University of Notre Dame. Open to all skill levels, the competition involved 3 sports across the day, allowing layers to experience different sports in an inclusive environment. In an event that celebrates the heritage and diverse sporting culture, all teams competed with pride in Badminton, Table Tennis, and Volleyball to claim the title as 2023 International Student Challenge champions.
The proceedings began with Noongar Elder Barry Winmar leading the universities in a traditional Welcome to Country. Overall, 95 students registered with 80 students from various locations around the globe. A great atmosphere throughout the event with Curtin University triumphant at the conclusion of all three sports. The closing ceremony featured two guest speakers, Viknash VM (UWA Senate Member, International Student Guild Onboarding Officer) and Clara Yuan (Placement Officer WIL, Student Life) to share on the positive impact sport has on the international student experience.
