Students from The University of Western Australia will hit the streets of Perth this Wednesday 22 March dressed in outlandish costumes to sell the annual satirical newspaper PROSH.
The students are aiming to raise more than $30,000 to support two local charities with this year’s reality TV-themed edition of the newspaper.
Recipients of the money raised will be Freedom Centre, a support service and safe space for the young LGBTQIA+ people in WA, and Dismantle Inc, a not-for-profit providing young people with enabling support so they can manage their life in a self-directed way.
PROSH, a UWA Student Guild initiative, is the oldest and most successful single‐day charity event in the country run entirely by students. Since its inception in 1931 PROSH has raised more than $2 million for over 100 charities.
UWA Guild President Geemal Jayawickrama said the generosity of the Perth community was vital to both the success of the long-standing student initiative and raising funds for the deserving charities.
“A group of dedicated student volunteers has been working for months to bring the PROSH spirit alive on campus in 2023,” he said.
“This year’s paper promises plenty of satirical articles and cartoons, controversial advertisements and more.
“The Guild is extremely proud of the PROSH tradition and the charitable contribution it has made in the WA community.”
On PROSH day, students will arrive on campus from 5am to collect the papers and descend on the streets of Perth in the CBD, Claremont, Subiaco, Mount Lawley and Fremantle. While they will be rattling tins for morning commuters, they will also accept electronic donations.
This year, PROSH will also be sold at two stalls on the corner Hay Street Mall and William Street, and the corner of Forrest Place and Murray Street Mall between 11am and 1.30pm.
