The 2022 Newnham Fellow Dr Heidi Shukralla is using the coveted prize to further her education in teaching.
Dr Shukralla has enrolled in a Graduate Diploma in Health Professions Education at UWA, while undertaking specialty training in public health medicine.
She started her career as a medical scientist before completing a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at UWA in 2012. She has since worked in obstetrics and gynaecology in Perth and Canberra, gaining the DRANZCOG qualification, and now lives and works in rural WA.
“I’ve always loved teaching and have taken advantage of every opportunity to teach more students and junior doctors in my clinical work,” she explained.
“My Graduate Diploma is particularly focussed on teaching other health professionals, as opposed to teaching school students, so it’s very relevant to my circumstances.”
The Dr Arthur and Mary Newnham Fellowship was established in 1987 and supports clinical education and positive public health outcomes in the communities where rural doctors live and work.
Arthur, a GP, and his wife Mary were passionate about supporting doctors in rural areas. Their children, Dr Ian Newnham, Ms Helen Newnham, Professor John Newnham and Mrs Jill Morgan, are helping to realise their parents’ vision through the Fellowship.
Applications are invited for the 2023 Fellowship valued at up to $12,000. Rural medical doctors in WA should plan and execute an innovative project with a focus on either clinical education for rural medical peers or public health outcomes for rural communities, and/or undertake part-time flexible online coursework at UWA.
