UWA Motorsport places at the F-SAE Australasia Competition

The 2022 Formula Society of Automotive Engineers (F-SAE) Australasia Competition took place from the 8 -11 December at the Winton Raceway in country Victoria.  After weeks away from home and countless hours testing, documenting and debugging, the UWA Motorsport Team placed 7th overall in the electric vehicle category of the competition in a field of 20 cars.

After passing all the required scrutineering inspections, UWA’s 2022 entry became the first electric vehicle from Western Australia to compete dynamically at a Formula SAE event – a huge achievement that served as the motivation for the team’s efforts throughout the competition weekend.

Progressing through the competition, UWA Motorsport placed 12th in Cost, 4th in Design and 2nd in Business across the static events, despite almost all of the team having never attended a competition before. The team placed well throughout the dynamic events too, placing 5th in Acceleration, 7th in Skid-pad and 4th in Autocross, until an unfortunate electrical fault caused the vehicle to come to a stop in the Endurance event, ruling out the team’s chances of a top 5 finish overall.

Despite the endurance event DNF, the team came away from the competition proud of their achievements and ready to improve on their performance for the 2023 competition. With next year’s electric vehicle already under construction, the team’s experience at F-SAE Australasia 2022 will serve as an important foundation on the design and operation methodology of the 2023 vehicle.

The team would like to congratulate all the teams that competed at the 2022 competition and thank the Society of Automotive Engineers for their organisation and operation of the event. A huge thankyou also to all our sponsors and supporters, without whom none of this would be possible.  Bring on the 2023 competition!
