The Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games (Summer Universiade) is set to take place in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China on Friday 28 July until Tuesday 8 August 2023. Two UWA student athletes have been selected to represent the Australian team (UniRoos) at the world’s largest international multisport event for student athletes.

After postponement due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Summer Universiade, run by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), will feature a strong UniRoos team with the addition of Giorgia Chin and Brandon Foo.

The student athletes will experience a twelve-day competition that involve a combination of high-level sport with educational and cultural events that drive FISU’s motto of ‘Excellence in Mind and Body’. Eighteen different sports will be contested at the games, with the UniRoos competing in ten of these sports throughout the 12 days of competition.

UWA student, Giorgia Chin, is currently studying a Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Neuroscience) and is looking forward to competing in Rhythmic Gymnastics – Individual category at her first World University Games. Rhythmic Gymnastics was first included in the Summer Universiade program in the 1991 games in Sheffield.

"After hearing the news that I was selected in the Australian team, I was very excited and in a bit of disbelief as the gymnastics field is quite competitive, but I’m truly honoured and humbled with the selection.”

A first-year student, Giorgia is passionate about her area of study, and hopes to complete her undergraduate studies and to pursue a postgraduate degree in Medicine. Brandon Foo is currently studying a Bachelor of Engineering and attributes his success in balancing his academic responsibilities and sporting commitments to the support of the UWA Student Athlete Development Program.

"I’ve been fortunate to have several support services and resources available as a student athlete which has helped myself find balance in sport and academics. I also enjoy the student athlete hub located in the UWA Fitness and Recreation Centre and connecting with the support staff in the Student Athlete Development Program."

Brandon will be representing the UniRoos team in the Wushu competition in the Male Naquan and Male Nangun discipline which will take place over six days at the Chengbei Gymnasium in Chengdu, China. Wushu was first included in the FISU programme at the 2017 Taipei Summer Universiade and is an optional sport which is only contested by request of the host.

UWA Sport congratulates Brandon Foo and Giorgia Chin on their selection to represent the UniRoos in Wushu and Rhythmic Gymnastics.
