UWA Sport are pleased to announce Matthew Mercer and Jackson Mews as head coaches of the 2023 UWA Maali squad, set to compete in the University Basketball League.
Each of these coaches have extensive coaching experience around Perth, and are set to help the Maali players leave their mark on the 2023 season.
Matthew Mercer will be coaching the women’s team, having previously been involved with the Perry Lakes Hawks, ECU, Eastern Suns and state representative teams. Notably, Matthew is currently an assistant coach for the Perry Lakes Hawks NBL1 women’s team, and was the head coach for the champion Perry Lakes Hawks Championship Division women’s team in 2022. “
This season, I am most excited about the opportunity to showcase local talent and UWA culture on the national level,” Mercer said.
Jackson Mews is the men’s head coach, and has experience across both the WABL and SBL/NBL1 competitions. Jackson has previously fulfilled roles as an assistant coach for both the Eastern Suns and Perry Lakes Hawks in the NBL1, and has also been head coach for the Eastern Suns, Cockburn Cougars and Perry Lakes Hawks in the WABL.
“I’m extremely excited this season to help develop a strong culture around the UWA UBL program,” said Mr. Mews. “I can’t wait to watch the show that these talented young men are going to put on for everyone at the University and that attends our games.”
Both coaches will make their debut with the UWA Maali in the first round of competition, beginning Tuesday 14 March against UTS in Sydney.
