Expert panel to discuss what The Voice will really mean for Australians

With Australians considering how they will vote in an historic referendum to be held later this year, a panel of legal and First Nations’ experts will discuss the legal implications of enshrining The Voice in the Australian Constitution at a free public event this Wednesday.

The University of Western Australian’s Public Policy Institute has partnered with the UWA Law School and the Australian Association of Constitutional Law to host the event, to be held on Wednesday 30 August.

Panel speakers include former Minister for Indigenous Australians the Honourable Ken Wyatt, UWA Chancellor and former High Court Chief Justice Robert French, UWA Law School lecturer Aurora Milroy and UWA graduate Kim Farmer, principal lawyer at Farmer Legal and Vice Chair of Polly Farmer Foundation. UWA Law School Associate Professor Murray Wesson will moderate the discussion.

UWA PPI Interim Director Associate Professor Paul Maginn said the referendum marked a once-in-a-generation moment for Australians to consider potential changes to the constitutional landscape and exercise their democratic right to help shape the future of our country. 

“The UWA Public Policy Institute facilitates thoughtful, considerate and evidence-based discussions on major policy questions and is delighted to bring together leading experts to outline the constitutional and legal aspects and implications of The Voice,” he said.
