Convocation elects new Warden

Convocation of UWA Graduates at The University of Western Australia has a new Warden.

In the 2022 Convocation Elections, Emeritus Professor Jenny Gregory AM was elected as Warden for a term of 12 months, Dr David Griffiths was elected as Deputy Warden, with Adjunct Professor Warren Kerr AM re-elected as Senator for his third and final term for the UWA Senate.

“I’m excited to have been elected as Warden of UWA's Convocation and honoured to be representing UWA's 140,000 graduates. It’s now time for action as Convocation Council begins to implement our new Strategic Plan, reimagining and revitalising Council to advance our University, Convocation, higher education and our community”, Emeritus Professor Gregory said.

An Emeritus Professor of History at UWA, where she taught Australian history, heritage, and urban history and, in a varied career, was Director of UWA Press and later Head of the School of Humanities, Emeritus Professor Gregory continues to supervise postgraduate students and undertake research.

Since her election as a Convocation Council member in 2018, Emeritus Professor Gregory has led the organisation of Convocation Day in 2019, 2020 and 2021 and has served on Convocation’s Review and Strategic Planning Committees, assisting to shape the future directions of Convocation.

Emeritus Professor Gregory thanked Immediate Past Warden Clinical Professor Lesley Cala for her leadership over the past two years.

“Clinical Professor Cala has been on Convocation Council since 2010 and, as Warden since 2020, working tirelessly to represent the interests and opinions of Convocation to the University and wider community.

“On behalf of Convocation Council and all members of Convocation, I thank Clinical Professor Cala for her hard work and commitment in continuing the important work of Council, through what have been very challenging times during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The results of the Convocation Elections were announced at the recent Convocation Ordinary Meeting on Friday 18 March, held over Zoom due to COVID restrictions, with over 225 people registered to attend online from WA, interstate and worldwide from 16 countries.

The membership of Convocation comprises over 140,000 graduates of UWA.
As a community and network of graduates, Convocation forms the electorate for elections of members to the UWA Senate and the Council of Convocation.
