Wins abound in Melbourne for Maali

The UWA Maali last week completed their first Away fixtures of the 2022 Season against RMIT University and La Trobe University in Melbourne, emerging with wins in 3 out of the 4 games played. 

The first match of the trip saw the Maali women go head-to-head against RMIT. UWA made the most of the first 5 minutes of the game to establish a 15-point lead. A comfortable lead was  maintained until the final quarter, when RMIT scored several 2-pointers in a row to close the gap. However, the Maali were able to score a few more times to bring the lead back out to a 13-point win of 61 to RMIT's 48 points. UWA's Jenna Teasdale was the highest scorer of the match with 19 points, and both Ella Dimanlig and Jenna Teasdale were the rebound leaders of the game.

It was then the Maali men's turn to take on RMIT in what proved to be a thrilling match. The first quarter was hotly contested, with RMIT emerging only one point ahead by the end of the period.The Maali began to pull ahead throughout the second quarter, before the margin closed once again at the tail end of the third quarter. The competition came to a head within the final quarter, with RMIT briefly retaking the lead with only 6 minutes on the clock before the Maali edged back in front with just under 2 minutes left to play. A couple of scores in the dying seconds of the match, including a 3-pointer from Luke Alexander, secured the Maali's win of 71 points to 66. The Maali's top scorer of this match was Nicholas Floyd with 16 points, followed by Harry Imison with 13 points. Nick Blight and Nicholas Floyd were the match's rebound leaders, taking 20 and 17 rebounds respectively. 

Thursday's fixures saw the Maali compete against La Trobe University. The women's team was the first to compete, and were looking to redeem the narrow to-pont loss against La Trobe in the 2021 UBL season. The game got off to a slow start for the Maali, who finished the quarter trailing La Trobe by 9 points. La Trobe continued to widen the score gap throughout the second period, leading by 30 points after the Maali scored only 6 points in the quarter. Following the half time break, the Maali found their stride, scoring 18 points in the third quarter, before losing steam again in the final quarter of the match for a final score of 87 - 41 to La Trobe University.

The Maali men rounded out the excursion with thier match against La Trobe. The first quarter was closely contested, with the Maali finishing the quarter with a 7-point lead. The Maali maintained a narrow lead throughout the second and third periods, before La Trobe closed the gap to only two points by the end of the third quarter. However, the Maali made the best of the situation and re-established a strong lead, finishing the game with 82 points to La Trobe's 73. Nicholas Floyd was by far the top scorer of the game, putting 30 points on the board for the Maali. 

The Maali have now returned home to Perth to play against Federation University on Tuesday 3 May, followed by the Western Derby blockbuster against Curtin University on Thursday 5 May.
