The Western Indigenous Games, held on Tuesday 7 September and hosted by UWA, was a huge success for UWA's Western Waagyls who walked away with a clean sweep of the competition, including the Wirrin Waabiny (Spirit of the Games) award.
The day began with a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony led by Dr Richard Walley. The Opening Ceremony was attended by all competing teams and special guests, including UWA Vice Chancellor Professor Amit Chakma, and UWA Director of Student Life Chris Massey.
The Waagyls were joined by teams from Curtin University, Edith Cowan University and Notre Dame University, who competed across Netball, Volleyball and Basketball competitions to decide the ultimate winner of the competition. The atmosphere was electric, with Noongar Radio 100.9FM broadcasting live from the event.
UWA took a clean sweep of the competition, winning all sports to claim the Boordia Wom (Champion Team) trophy. After votes from the officials of all sports were counted, UWA also managed to narrowly claim the Wirrin Waabiny (Spirit of the Games) award. This award recognises sportsmanship and respect of opponents, competition, umpires and cultural traditions.
Congratulations to the Western Waagyls and to all competing universities for contributing to this successful event.
