New appointment to strengthen UWA links with planning profession

The University of Western Australia has honoured the State’s top urban planner.

David Caddy, Chair of the Western Australia Planning Commission (WAPC), has been appointed Adjunct Professor (Urban and Regional Planning) in the Department of Geography and Planning at UWA.

Professor Caddy has had a long connection with the urban and regional planning programs at UWA having taught statutory planning to both undergraduate and postgraduate students from 2010-2018.

“Professor Caddy has 50 years of experience in urban and regional planning within local and state government and the private sector and is a Life Fellow of the Planning Institute of Australia for his contribution to the planning profession and planning education."

He played an instrumental role in helping establish the urban and regional planning programs at UWA in 2007, along with other organisations including, Satterley, WALGA, the UDIA (WA), Hatch Roberts Day, Charles Johnson (former CEO, City of Wanneroo), Ian Cowie (CEO, City of Gosnells); McLeod’s Lawyers, and the Property Education Foundation.

Professor Caddy said it was an honour to reconnect with the University and further contribute to the education of UWA students.

“Next year marks 50 years of involvement in the planning profession for me, from a student in 1971, to my present role as Chairman of the Western Australian Planning Commission,” Professor Caddy said.

“Throughout that time, I’ve maintained my passion for all aspects of planning and very much look forward to sharing my knowledge and experience with the next generation of young planners.”

Dr Paul Maginn, inaugural program co-ordinator of Urban and Regional Planning at UWA said Professor Caddy’s appointment was testimony of his contribution to planning practice and education.

“Professor Caddy has 50 years of experience in urban and regional planning within local and state government and the private sector and is a Life Fellow of the Planning Institute of Australia for his contribution to the planning profession and planning education,” Dr Maginn said.

“His appointment will help strengthen the training and mentoring of UWA planning students and graduates and enhance our links with the wider planning profession in WA.”
