Meta Overman’s music and her response to a new land with Dr Ashley Smith

Friday 28 July, 1pm-2pm

Join internationally renowned and award-winning clarinet soloist and bass clarinettist Dr Ashley Smith at LWAG as he discusses Meta Overman’s contribution to contemporary music in Australia.

-----------------------

Surviving two world wars in Holland, Overman migrated to Australia in 1951, living first in WA. She composed for piano solo, orchestra, operas, ballets and chamber works, and considered her most important piece to be Psyche, a three-act opera that was performed in the Sunken Garden at UWA as part of the 1955 Festival of Perth.

Dr Smith is a Senior Lecturer at the UWA Conservatorium of Music where he is Head of Winds and Contemporary Performance. He performs and teaches art music, specialising in twentieth and twenty-first century repertoire. A PhD graduate of UWA, with a Masters Degree from Yale, Dr Smith is a Fellow of the Australian National Academy of Music.
