AAIMS Fourth Annual Conference | 21-22 November 2023
The University of Western Australia's Centre for Muslim States and Societies is pleased to host the National Conference of Australian Association of Islamic and Muslim Studies (AAIMS). AAIMS' flagship annual conference will be held on 21-22 November 2023 at the University Club of Western Australia, The University of Western Australia, Perth.
AAIMS is Australia’s leading academic association for scholars engaged in research and the dissemination of knowledge about Islam and Muslim societies. The Association is interdisciplinary and fosters a network of academics based at Australian universities to generate opportunities for joint scholarly research across disciplines and institutions, disseminate research by its members, and promote national and international collaborations.
The central theme of the conference, 'Islam in a Polarised World', draws attention to the roles, contemporary place, and future of Islam in the emerging multipolarity in global politics, with its accompanying shifting power relations and turbulences. It also draws attention to the multiple forms of cultural, political and religious ‘polarisations’ in both local and global contexts and what these mean not just for peaceful co-existence but also for Islam and Muslims in both Muslim majority and Muslim minority contexts.

- AAIMS members: A$180 (additional $50 if attending dinner reception)
- Non-members: A$210 (additional $70 if attending dinner reception)

Forrest Hall is a residential college located near UWA. You will need to select the type of accommodation you require (single, twin-share, or studio) and the duration of your stay.

The new Wonil Hotel is a 3-star hotel located in the suburb of Crawley, which is situated close to the university.
St Catherine's on Park
St Catherine's on Park is situated opposite UWA and adjacent to St Catherine's College.
Quest Mounts Bay Road
Quest Mounts Bay Road is a serviced apartment hotel located in Perth CBD, about 15 minutes drive from UWA.
Pan Pacific Perth
Pan Pacific Perth is a luxury hotel located in Perth CBD, about 15 minutes drive from UWA.

- From Perth CBD:
Take the 23, 24, or 102 bus from the bus stop on St Georges Terrace in Perth CBD, which is located outside the Perth Underground Station
Get off at the bus stop located outside the main entrance of UWA, which is on Stirling Highway - From Fremantle:
Take the 103 bus from the Fremantle Train Station
Get off at the bus stop located outside the main entrance of UWA, which is on Stirling Highway - From Claremont:
Take the 23 or 102 bus from the bus stop located outside the Claremont Train Station
Get off at the bus stop located outside the main entrance of UWA, which is on Stirling Highway

The nearest train station to UWA is the Claremont Train Station, which is about 2.5 km away from the campus. From Claremont Station, you can take a bus or walk to UWA.
To take a bus, go to the bus stop located outside the train station and take the 23 or 102 bus to UWA. The journey takes about 10 minutes.

To get to the UWA by car, you can follow the directions below:
From Perth CBD:
- Take St Georges Terrace or Riverside Drive heading south
- Turn left onto Mounts Bay Road
- Continue on Mounts Bay Road for approximately 3 km
- Turn right onto Hackett Drive
- Follow Hackett Drive for approximately 1.5 km
- Turn left onto Stirling Highway
- The main entrance to UWA will be on your left
From Fremantle:
- Take Marine Terrace heading north
- Turn left onto Hampton Road
- Continue on Hampton Road for approximately 5 km
- Turn right onto Stirling Highway
- The main entrance to UWA will be on your right
From Claremont:
- Take Stirling Highway heading south
- Continue on Stirling Highway for approximately 3 km
- The main entrance to UWA will be on your left
Note: Parking on the UWA campus is limited and can be expensive, especially during peak periods. You can use the Pay-As-You-Go parking system on campus or alternatively there is street parking or public parking options nearby.
