Performance Indicators in Primary Schools (PIPS)

The Performance Indicators in Primary Schools (PIPS) On-Entry Baseline Assessment is administered by The University of Western Australia and offered to schools and systems in Australia. This assessment of literacy and numeracy can assist with tracking progress of students entering primary school.

PIPS also supports with:

• assessing the progress of students in literacy, numeracy and phonological awareness
• diagnosing individual student work and providing data to indicate which areas students are achieving or underachieving in
• predicting future performance for identifying individuals who might benefit from early intervention

Based on international research, all assessment items are correlated with future literacy and numeracy.

The PIPS assessment allows progress to be measured in many different contexts, rather than against local curriculum objectives. The computer-based assessment also helps schools in terms of their accountability and reporting. The longitudinal study has been collecting data twice yearly for more than 15 years.
