PROJECT

Life Below Water

The Life Below Water Project is a joint outreach program between the OceanWorks and UWA Girls in Engineering that seeks to inspire the next generation of leaders and problem-solvers through creativity, community and art.

Uniting Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics with the visual Arts, this STEAM program celebrates biodiversity in our oceans and champions the UN sustainable development goals relating to responsible marine management.

In its inaugural year in 2019, over 40 Years 5 students from Presbyerian Ladies’ College created multimedia masterpieces depicting the ocean as it is, could, and should be.

"Life Under the Sea"

Overall Winner

By Aurelia, 11 Years of Age

I drew my underwater world in a very detailed and creative way. I also wanted to connect my love for coral reefs through creativity and art. I used a range of colours showing the contrast and different unique textures of the reef, adding lots of materials to make this artwork appealing.

The message conveyed through this artwork is for everyone to make a difference in maintaining the beauty of coral reefs. The idea of using full colour instead of bleached, is because I wanted my audience to alwaysremember the beauty and the bright side of a good healthy marine life.

"Seaweed: A forest beneath the waves"

Runner-Up

By Alicia, 10 Years of Age

Seaweed plays an important role in marine ecosystems for many organisms from the seabed to the ocean’s surface. It also provides shelter and habitat. When people look at my artwork, I hope it makes them think twice about polluting our oceans and damaging the ecosystems.

"Bleaching Me Dry, or A Question of Life and Death"

Runner-Up

By Olivia, 11 Years of Age

My artwork is about bleached coral and how human activity is effecting our oceans.

I hope that when people view my artwork they realise that we must look after our oceans and its inhabitants. Human activity has caused so much damage to coral reefs so it is up to us to save it and bring it back to life.
