Name: Markus Schlaich
Achievement: Professor Markus Schlaich, the inaugural Dobney Chair in Clinical Research at UWA’s Medical School and Royal Perth Hospital, is the recipient of the 2024 Paul Dudley White International Scholar Award from the American Heart Association. He won the award for his abstract A major effect of aprocitentan on albuminuria in patients with resistant hypertension.
The award is presented to the author of the highest ranked abstract submitted from each country to the American Heart Association’s Hypertension Scientific Sessions 2024. This award is named for Dr Paul Dudley White, who founded the American Heart Association and was an early leader in preventive cardiology. The award reflects Dr White’s vision for global excellence in cardiovascular science and medicine.
Name: Samantha Tough
Achievement: Samantha Tough, Pro Vice Chancellor Industry and Commercial, has been appointed to the board of the Innovation Attraction Fund. The State Government initiative encourages new investment in WA to create local jobs and a more diversified economy. It is a key enabler for investment attraction to support the State’s economic diversification priorities in sectors such as: energy; mining and mining equipment, technology and services; defence industries; space industries; health and medical life sciences; primary industries; international education; and tourism, events and creative industries. The fund supports supply chain development, advanced manufacturing, and science, innovation and technology.
Name: Jacqueline Birt
Achievement: Professor Jacqueline Birt, Deputy Dean of UWA’s Business School, has been named in the Top 50 Women in Accounting for 2024. The Women in Accounting judging panel selected 50 outstanding women from a pool of 1258 nominations from 29 countries who exemplify leadership, innovation, and the spirit of change. The list celebrates the trailblazing women in accounting and bookkeeping from across the globe who are making a profound impact on the industry. “Don't be afraid to speak up and share your wisdom,” Professor Birt said. “If you are on a board and the only female representative, you are there for a reason and you have done the hard work to get there! Other women will benefit from you sharing your insights and experiences.”
Name: Rishi Kotecha
Achievement: Associate Professor Rishi Kotecha, from UWA’s Medical School, has been named Cancer Council WA’s 2024 Cancer Researcher of the Year. The prestigious award recognises Associate Professor Kotecha’s contributions to advancing leukaemia research and improving access to clinical trials and cutting-edge therapies for infants and children in Western Australia. In particular, his research has made a significant impact on improving the outcomes for infants diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. Associate Professor Kotecha is co-Head of Leukaemia Translational Research at The Kids Research Institute Australia Cancer Centre and Consultant Paediatric Oncologist at Perth Children's Hospital.
Name: Maria Ignatieva
Achievement: Professor Maria Ignatieva, from UWA’s Design School, has received the 2024 International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) President’s Award at the 60th World Congress in Istanbul. Her groundbreaking work in urban biodiversity, sustainable design, and education has made a lasting impact on landscape architecture. The award is a testament to her dedication, visionary leadership, and unwavering commitment to creating greener, more sustainable cities. The award is presented by the IFLA President in recognition of an outstanding individual who, through their voluntary efforts within IFLA, has made a fundamental difference to the global profession of landscape architecture.
Name: Marilyn Bromberg
Achievement: Associate Professor Marilyn Bromberg is a finalist for the Lawyer’s Weekly Women in Law Awards in the category of Academic/Researcher of the Year 2024. The awards recognise the influence of exceptional women across the Australian legal industry. The winners will be announced at a ceremony in Melbourne on November 14. Associate Professor Bromberg won the UWA Law School’s 2024 Award for Research Impact and Innovation.
