A longstanding partnership between The University of Western Australia and Shenton College has been strengthened following yesterday’s signing of a renewed agreement between the two institutions.
The Learning Links program was established in 2001 to deliver high quality academic and co-curricular programs to Shenton College students, while fostering a strong awareness of UWA among students.
"Our aim is to build community experience into all our programs, and we’ve been particularly mindful of the challenging circumstances that students have faced this year."
Professor David Sadler
UWA Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) Professor David Sadler said the partnership with Shenton College provided a valuable opportunity for the University to engage with the local community.
“Our aim is to build community experience into all our programs, and we’ve been particularly mindful of the challenging circumstances that students have faced this year,” Professor Sadler said.
The initiative enables Shenton College students to take part in work placements at UWA and learn about high-level research projects.
This year’s program will involve more than 40 Year 10 students from Shenton College undertaking work placements at UWA, mostly during the upcoming school holidays.
School principal Mike Morgan has been appointed a Senior Honorary Teaching Fellow at UWA, along with 13 Shenton College teachers who have been made Honorary Teaching Fellows. Shenton College staff will also host UWA Master of Teaching students during a series of professional learning seminars.
Professor Tanya Fitzgerald, Dean and Head of UWA’s Graduate School of Education, said the honorary appointments recognised the knowledge, skills and expertise that the professional educators at Shenton College brought to UWA.
Through the Learning Links program a senior executive at UWA has held a position on the Shenton College School Board. Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Graham Brown currently holds the board position.
