The University of Western Australia has achieved its highest-ever place among the world’s top universities, jumping from 99 to 85 this year in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).
The 2020 rankings released by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy reveal UWA is equal sixth in Australia with Monash University. The significant increase in rank exceeds UWA’s previous highest rank of 87 in 2015.
“I would like to thank our colleagues for their globally recognised outstanding contributions to knowledge creation, and for providing an enriched learning experience to our students by incorporating research into teaching.”

The ARWU rank reaffirms UWA’s place among the top 100 universities in the world. The University also received five-star ratings in four categories of the Good Universities Guide, released today. These include five stars for student-teacher ratio, student demand, teaching quality (undergraduate) and learner engagement (postgraduate).
UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Amit Chakma said both rankings reflected the strength and depth of the combined efforts of researchers at UWA as well as a commitment to teaching strength and student experience.
“Importantly, UWA research not only ranks highly internationally, but our research results have also been recognised for delivering impacts that benefit our communities,” Professor Chakma said.
“Our students benefit from our highly motivated academics who have strong connections to industry and other internationally recognised researchers.

UWA is ranked in the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects world top 50 for 11 subjects and achieved the highest rankings in Australia for five STEM subjects: Mining and Mineral Engineering, Marine/Ocean Engineering, Agricultural Sciences, Environmental Science and Engineering and Biological Sciences.
The ARWU ranking is considered the pre-eminent global rankings of universities based on research metrics.
